Explaining The Difference Between Brick & Stone Masonry

Building a DFW home or business with masonry is a timeless choice. Both brick and stone create a look that lasts forever, requiring only occasional regular maintenance to stay tall and strong for decades. Brick masonry creates a cozy, lived-in feeling for any building, while stone can be stately or creative depending on the type of stone masonry you choose.

But just what is the difference between brick masonry and stone masonry? As a team that does both, Brick Experts can offer a few insights to help you learn the difference and how to choose which type of masonry you might prefer for each project.

What is Brick Masonry?

Brick masonry involves laying composite bricks in layers packed with mortar or bond. Bricks can be made with many material mixes, including clay, fly ash, concrete, sand lime, and engineering bricks. You can choose the material and color, as bricks are mixed and pressed, so there is a great deal of control over the final appearance in manufacturing.

Brick is installed using one of three types of bonds: structural bond, pattern bond, and mortar bond. Structural and pattern bonds determine how the bricks are laid and their appearance when installed, while a mortar bond refers to the adhesive between each brick.

What is Stone Masonry?

Stone masonry is heavier and more complex than brick masonry. It involves laying stone blocks between mortar, sometimes in the shape of bricks or sometimes with mortar holding together more natural stone shapes. Each stone must be cut and dressed before it is ready for building. You can also polish stone masonry so it gleams and becomes its own finish.
Brick Vs. Stone Masonry: Longevity & Durability
Brick and stone both have the potential for longevity. However, stone will typically last longer than brick if both are well-maintained. Without regular maintenance, both will see weakened mortar before the bricks or stones wear away.

Brick Vs. Stone Masonry: Strength

Brick and stone are durable and robust, but stone can resist damage better. Brick tends to be more porous, scratchable, and may crumble on impact, whereas many stones will not evidence these behaviors. Brick may crumble over time, whereas a stone wall will only see mortar loss.

Brick Vs. Stone Masonry: Aesthetics

Brick masonry is a warm, charming building material that can naturally make a building more welcoming. Stone, however, tends to be more formal. Stone masonry can also be polished to a lovely gleam.

Brick Vs. Stone Masonry: Cost

Brick masonry is almost universally more affordable than stone masonry. This is because bricks are lighter, typically more regular, and easy to source. Stone can be heavy and irregular and relies on quarried sources worldwide.

I contacted Brick Experts to repair a hairline crack on the south wall of my house as well as the mortar joints over the arched entry to my garage. I was concerned about matching the brick color since the home is fifteen years old and the brick has long been discontinued. I worked with Brian who did a great job finding a very close match. If you didn't know where to look, you'd never notice. Overall, the quality of the work was outstanding. The mason who did the repairs was professional and courteous and did a great job cleaning up the job site. I also felt the price was fair. I would highly recommend Brick Experts and would use them again should the need arise.

Brick Experts Ft Worth rebuilt our brick mailbox that was the original home builder's 20 year old installation. From the first moment we contacted Brick Experts Ft Worth I knew we made the correct company selection. My website inquiry was answered within 30 minutes by a phone call even though it was after their normal business hours. Marcos, who was the project manager, came the next day and provided the estimate by early afternoon. I asked many questions about the build process and it was evident that Marcos had actually done masonry work before. The actual work started within one week. Responsive and easy to do business with. The brick mason crew spent about 1 1/2 days on the rebuild which included a new base which now has rebar to reinforce against movement of Carrollton soil. They were deliberate and meticulous with the build. It was obvious from watching that these gentlemen were experienced brick masons. They made precision brick cuts with masonry saw so rounded top of mailbox had smooth angles and corners. Clean-up was done each day and they even made sure all dry mortar chips were cleaned up from grass. I will definitely use Brick Experts Ft Worth for any future masonry projects I may have. Thank you to Marcos and crew for job well done.

I received a number of quotes from different companies. David came out to take a look at our from porch and the repair work that was needed. He took the time to explain things in detail to my wife and she felt the most comfortable with David's recommendations. Once we signed the contract, David has a crew out in less than a week. Could not be happier with our decision! Robert Colmery

We've had work done twice and both times he's been prompt, reliable, and did great work. My husband was in that same business in Ohio for 40 years, so he's not easy to please. But he's been very pleased with their work

Brick experts did a really nice job fixing my mortar and putting in some expansion joints. They got most of the work done in a half a day and then came back to finish up two days later. I am very satisfied with the work and the price!

Brick Experts did a great job handling several problems for us. The process started out with David, who was timely and responsive. Then the good work done by Enrique and José: - Replaced a section of exposed aggregate driveway - thanks, Felix and crew. - Removed rotten redwood from the expansion joints in the driveway and pool deck and filled with sanded-top caulk; - Reset two driveway brick lines and replaced broken bricks; - Replaced dried out mastic around our pool; - Straightened two leaning brick pillars. The guys on the job worked hard in the summer heat and finished everything with quality. Pricing was fair.
