Brick Columns

Beyond their practical function, brick columns are a classy addition to any home:

Dimensions and Sizes

Your brick columns can be customized to fit your home’s specific needs, from holding up structures to adding aesthetic upgrades to your exterior.

Reinforced Or Unreinforced

Columns can be either hollow or reinforced, depending on their purpose. Aesthetic upgrades don’t require reinforcement but any column bearing weight requires a rebar and concrete inner construction.

Design and Aesthetics

Brick columns come in many shapes: round, rectangular, square, or elliptical. With all these options, brick columns work perfectly in everything from corner pillars and porch supports to entryways.

Types of Brick Arches

You’ll find several beautiful arch styles throughout Dallas-Fort Worth homes:

  • Jack Arches sit flat across short openings

  • Segmental Arches curve less than a half-circle

  • Semicircular Arches form perfect half-circles, ideal for larger openings

  • Multicentered Arches have complex curves with multiple pivot points

  • Gothic Arches come to a point at the top, adding dramatic flair

Brick Fences

Brick fences are made of columns connected by sections of brick walls. The columns provide structural support and the connecting sections provide a significant security and privacy barrier that’s also elegant in appearance.

Brick fences are very customizable with various bonding patterns and weaves. You can create unique 3D designs with bricks placed at different depths and in various patterns that create shadows and texture along the length of your wall.

Some parts can be exposed, or it can all be solid, to block views completely. And regardless of your design choices, you can be sure that the wall will be sturdy and safe for decades to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the most common questions we receive about brick masonry features for homes. These insights come from our years of experience working with brick across Dallas-Fort Worth.

What brick features can be added to enhance my home’s appearance?

Brick arches, columns, and various types of brick veneer are excellent additions that boost your home’s visual appeal and add character to otherwise plain facades. Brick porches, steps, and planter boxes are also popular around the front entrance of many homes. Brick can also be laid in many patterns, at vary depths, and with other techniques that represent almost limit ways to personalize your design.

Can decorative brick features be added to an existing home or only during new construction?

You can absolutely add decorative features to your existing brick home but the process requires careful planning. The key is proper assessment of the existing foundation and walls before installation. With the right techniques, additions can seamlessly blend with your home’s original design, looking as though they’ve always been there.

Are decorative brick features like arches structural or just ornamental?

Brick arches can be either structural or purely decorative depending on their design. Structural arches transfer vertical loads to the supporting walls or columns. These require proper support during construction and adequate curing time. Non-structural arches, meanwhile, are fully supported by hidden elements like steel angles or plates. They provide the beautiful arch aesthetic but don’t carry weight themselves. Both types offer distinctive charm to your home.

How are brick arches and columns constructed?

Building brick arches starts with careful design planning and temporary wooden supports called centering. This framework holds the arch shape during construction until the mortar cures completely (at least seven days). Bricks are laid in specific patterns with careful attention to joint thickness and alignment. Columns can be solid brick masonry or, more commonly, brick veneer around a core. For structural columns supporting arches, restraints are added to handle the arch’s outward thrust forces and ensure long-term stability.

What maintenance is required for brick features like columns and arches?

Annual inspection of your brick arches and columns helps catch problems early. Look for cracks, displacement, or deteriorating mortar joints. Expansion joints need periodic checking to ensure they’re still allowing proper movement without causing brickwork damage. If you spot a potential issue, call a masonry specialist immediately -the cost only goes up over time.
