How to Design a Brick Privacy Fence for Your Yard

Having privacy around your property is essential for many homeowners and landlords. Whether you have children you want to protect, pets you want to keep from wandering, or you simply desire to have your own space without intrusion by neighbors, privacy walls can go a long way towards making your property secure.

While many types of privacy walls apply to widely varying circumstances and surrounding environments, it is hard to beat a brick or concrete wall for several reasons. Read on to better understand your options when securing outdoor spaces and designing beautiful — and effective — privacy walls.

What to Consider Before You Design a Brick Privacy Fence

Building a boundary wall for backyard privacy may seem like a simple endeavor — and in many ways, it is indeed less complex than other home improvements. But there are still a number of factors to consider before you design your boundary wall.

The initial step for designing and building your wall is understanding all relevant local permits and regulations. In some jurisdictions, you may have more latitude than in others when designing privacy walls. It is a good idea to contact your local government office or research online to understand what legal preparations you need to make as you design your wall. After all, you do not want to get started on a project, only to learn you failed to secure a requisite permit.

After establishing legal guidelines around building your wall, the design and materials in the project will likely be the next major consideration.

Consider the Height of Your Privacy Fence or Screen

Height is a crucial consideration when determining the size of any privacy walls. A wall that is too tall may make your outdoor spaces feel claustrophobic or overly enclosed — and could even block crucial sunlight for plants. On the other hand, a short wall can sometimes serve functional, structural purposes — for instance, as a retaining wall for the garden. That said, a wall that is too short may also avoid fulfilling its function of providing privacy.

Choose Appropriate Materials and Plants

While there are countless materials used for walls, a concrete or brick wall remains a basic, sturdy, and reliable choice for a privacy wall. Why? Brick and concrete are very strong materials, likely to last many years with only limited upkeep. Their sturdiness can also serve other functions — for instance, they can make excellent retaining walls for gardens and other landscape features.

Finally, both brick and concrete can be aesthetically beneficial selections. They can be customized to provide a more “rustic” or traditional feel, decorated with murals or other design elements, or combined with other materials to provide cost-effective, sturdy wall solutions.

As you consider materials, be sure to also think about what plants you may want along your wall. Shrubs, trees, flowers, and other plants can add a healthy aesthetic touch to your privacy wall, ensuring it stays discreet while effectively greening up your outdoor space. Just be sure to give appropriate consideration to the soil type, amount of sun, and requisite water any plant will need, to ensure that wherever the plant is situated, it can thrive alongside your privacy wall.

Harmonize With the Neighborhood

Naturally, a concern for any homeowner is that home design features fit tastefully into a broader neighborhood aesthetic. In some cases, this may be less of a problem — for instance, if your wall is in a backyard and not clearly visible to neighbors or the broader community. But at other times, your wall may quite obviously face out into the broader neighborhood, and you will likely want to take care to ensure it is a good fit. (In some cases — for instance, in certain neighborhoods or homeowners associations — this may be a legal requirement.)

Fortunately, brick and cement walls, in addition to being very sturdy, are highly customizable. There is almost certainly any number of stylistic choices you can make to ensure any brick or cement privacy walls fit well within the overall aesthetic of your neighborhood.

Blend In With Your Home’s Architecture

Of course, blending in with the neighborhood is not the only concern. You will likely want to ensure that any privacy screening walls mesh well with your home’s architecture. This is even more true in cases where your privacy wall may about your home.

In the same spirit, brick and concrete offer a simplicity of design that allows them to go with virtually any type of home construction. For more challenging cases, adding design features, as well as plantings, can ensure that your privacy wall blends nicely with the style of your home.

Why Working with Masonry Professionals is the Best Idea

While you may be tempted to get started on your privacy wall on your own, the best bet with a complex wall project is to hire a professional. Why? Professional builders have the skill and dexterity with various building materials, ensuring your final project will come out great. After all, there is nothing worse than getting halfway through a project and realizing you are in over your hand.

This is doubly true with brick and cement, which can be surprisingly challenging to work with and require unique masonry skills.

I contacted Brick Experts to repair a hairline crack on the south wall of my house as well as the mortar joints over the arched entry to my garage. I was concerned about matching the brick color since the home is fifteen years old and the brick has long been discontinued. I worked with Brian who did a great job finding a very close match. If you didn't know where to look, you'd never notice. Overall, the quality of the work was outstanding. The mason who did the repairs was professional and courteous and did a great job cleaning up the job site. I also felt the price was fair. I would highly recommend Brick Experts and would use them again should the need arise.

Brick Experts Ft Worth rebuilt our brick mailbox that was the original home builder's 20 year old installation. From the first moment we contacted Brick Experts Ft Worth I knew we made the correct company selection. My website inquiry was answered within 30 minutes by a phone call even though it was after their normal business hours. Marcos, who was the project manager, came the next day and provided the estimate by early afternoon. I asked many questions about the build process and it was evident that Marcos had actually done masonry work before. The actual work started within one week. Responsive and easy to do business with. The brick mason crew spent about 1 1/2 days on the rebuild which included a new base which now has rebar to reinforce against movement of Carrollton soil. They were deliberate and meticulous with the build. It was obvious from watching that these gentlemen were experienced brick masons. They made precision brick cuts with masonry saw so rounded top of mailbox had smooth angles and corners. Clean-up was done each day and they even made sure all dry mortar chips were cleaned up from grass. I will definitely use Brick Experts Ft Worth for any future masonry projects I may have. Thank you to Marcos and crew for job well done.

I received a number of quotes from different companies. David came out to take a look at our from porch and the repair work that was needed. He took the time to explain things in detail to my wife and she felt the most comfortable with David's recommendations. Once we signed the contract, David has a crew out in less than a week. Could not be happier with our decision! Robert Colmery

We've had work done twice and both times he's been prompt, reliable, and did great work. My husband was in that same business in Ohio for 40 years, so he's not easy to please. But he's been very pleased with their work

Brick experts did a really nice job fixing my mortar and putting in some expansion joints. They got most of the work done in a half a day and then came back to finish up two days later. I am very satisfied with the work and the price!

Brick Experts did a great job handling several problems for us. The process started out with David, who was timely and responsive. Then the good work done by Enrique and José: - Replaced a section of exposed aggregate driveway - thanks, Felix and crew. - Removed rotten redwood from the expansion joints in the driveway and pool deck and filled with sanded-top caulk; - Reset two driveway brick lines and replaced broken bricks; - Replaced dried out mastic around our pool; - Straightened two leaning brick pillars. The guys on the job worked hard in the summer heat and finished everything with quality. Pricing was fair.
