That's why it continues to be one of the most widely used materials for building homes and businesses today. Brick Experts DFW is Dallas's trusted stonework masonry company, and for good reason. What is Brick Masonry?

Brick masonry is a method that involves strategically placing bricks and permanently adhering them to one another with mortar. The end result is a solid structure that can withstand incredible pressure and a wide range of weather conditions. Many different types of bricks and mortar can be used to create different architectural styles across a range of applications.

Different Types of Brick

Bricks are available in a wide range of colors and materials, but clay and concrete are used in brick masonry most often. Other common types of bricks include:
  • Common burnt clay bricks
  • Concrete bricks
  • Engineering bricks
  • Fly ash clay bricks
  • Sand lime (calcium silicate) bricks
Less widely used bricks include bullnose, channel, coping, cow nose, and hollow bricks.

Different Types of Brick Masonry

Cement brickwork uses cement mortar to adhere bricks to one another. When it comes to this type of masonry, it can be divided into three types:
  • First Class: These bricks have sharp edges, and the mortar joints are under 10mm in thickness.
  • Second Class: These bricks are irregularly shaped and have a rough texture, and the mortar joints are 12mm in thickness.
  • Third Class: These bricks are softer than first and second-class bricks, and they're shape is very different. They're typically used to build temporary structures in areas that don't experience a lot of rain.
Mud brickwork uses mud as mortar instead of cement. The thickness of the mud mortar is usually around 12mm, and it's a very cost-effective way to install brick masonry. It's also only recommended for walls that reach up to 4m in height.
